Sammy gets the scoop from Peter
On Thursday, November 20th, the Murchison Ultimate team wrapped up their fall session with a practice that featured several players from UT's open team, TUFF. Middle school ultimate met college disc as the players threw around together and got to know each other. Several Murchison players were prepared with brainstormed questions to ask their mentors, and the college guys took several minutes to answer them.
Sammy Pappert(Murchison) gets the scoop from Peter Clarke(TUFF) here:
Sammy Pappert: What is your schedule like on practice days?
Peter Clarke: We do a warm-up, run one drill, do some conditioning, then more drills, scrimmage, and then a cool-down and stretch.
SP: What year are you in school?
PC: I’m a senior in college.
SP: How long have you played Ultimate?
PC: I’ve been playing for two years; since I was a sophomore in college.
SP: What are your long-term Ultimate goals?
PC: My short-term goals are to play on a national-level club team, and my short term goals include playing in Worlds one day.
SP: Why did you start playing Ultimate?
PC: I had a friend who dragged me out to play pick-up one day.
SP: What was your first Ultimate experience like?
PC: It was a bad pick-up game and I had no idea what I was doing. But it was FUN!
SP: Do you play on any other teams besides TUFF?
PC: I’m not on any other consistent team besides TUFF.
SP: What classes are you taking?
PC: Mostly engineering (I’m an aero-space engineering major) and math classes.
SP: Can you get a scholarship to play Ultimate?
PC: Not currently.
SP: Do you play against schools across the U.S.?
PC: Yes.
SP: How do your parents feel about you playing Ultimate?
PC: They like the fact that I’m playing sports in college.
SP: Who are your Ultimate role models?
PC: Steven Presley and Tank (Michael Natenberg).
SP: Who is your biggest rival?
PC: Kansas.
SP: What other sports did/do you play?
PC: A lot, but mostly basketball and swimming.
SP: Do you have cool uniforms?
PC: (Laughing) YES!!
SP: What do you do in your free time?
PC: I play ultimate!!
SP: What are tournaments like?
PC: They’re really fun…great all-around.
SP: Where are you from originally?
PC: Stillwater, Oklahoma.
SP: What brought you to UT?
PC: The academics.
SP: What are practices for TUFF like?
PC: They’re hardcore!
SP: What was your favorite Ultimate moment so far?
PC: Making the semi-finals at Nationals with TUFF.
Sammy Pappert is an eighth grader at Murchison Middle School, and this is his third year playing Ultimate. He was elected a captain of the school’s “B” team as a sixth grader, and captained the “A” team as a seventh grader in 2009. Sammy played in the Live Logic Texas Shootout Middle School Showcase game at House Park last spring. Sammy is also a member of Murchison’s soccer team, and he hopes to continue playing both sports in high school.
