It will be the most significant Texas tournament to happen all year! And, chances are that YOU won't get to play in it. You will not qualify. You are not eligible. High School Ultimate is exploding across Texas like bluebonnets along the highway after a wet winter. In past years, tourneys may have just been one-day events with a smattering of teams in attendance. However, the lid is blowing off the top of the popper at this year's first-ever UPA Texas State High School Tournament ... where between 24 and 30 teams are expected to participate!
If you have any connections to High School Ultimate, either as a player, parent, teacher, coach, or friend, start spreading the word now. The basic details are... April 17-18 in Round Rock Texas! The website with all of the elaborate details will be here!
One of the reasons this particular tournament is so special is because it will be the first-ever high school state tournament in Texas sanctioned by the UPA -the Ultimate Players Association - Ultimate's governing body for all of the United States. The event will also be co-sponsored by UPLA (Austin), HUC (Houston) and Dallas Ultimate (Dallas-Fort Worth) [UPLA stands for Ultimate Players League of Austin and is pronounced YOU-play. HUC stands for Houston Ultimate Community].
THE MEANING OF "UPA SANCTIONED"
Texas has taken a big step by making this a UPA sanctioned event! To begin with, all players participating in this event will be covered by the UPA's insurance. That in itself is huge but the real benefits go much further. There are standards of quality that must be met and a stamp of legitimacy that can now be promoted to students, parents and participating schools because this event is affiliated with the UPA.
In 2009, a total of 23 states were host to a UPA State High School Championship. By continuing to expand their support of Youth Ultimate, the UPA is working to achieve their goal of advancing the sport of Ultimate from the ground up. UPLA, HUC and Dallas Ultimate recognized the need to have a UPA sponsored state tournament in Texas due to the rapid explosion of high school teams across the State over the past several years. With that growth comes a greater responsibility to introduce a new generation of players to the UPA's mission - To advance the sport of Ultimate in the United States by enhancing and promoting Character, Community and Competition.
