Showdown Try-Outs

The elite women's team Showdown, which participated in Nationals last year, is currently hosting tryouts for the fall series. Cara Crouch provided us with more information about them.

  • What date(s) are the tryouts?
  • May 2-3rd, 9-10th

  • How many spots are open?
  • This depends on tryoutees and returners.

  • What is the team's mission and what are the goals?
  • Showdown's overall goal is to combine the best regional talent into an elite-level and nationally competitive ultimate team while upholding principles of sportsmanship, leadership, and friendship. We play for the love of the game and the satisfaction of striving for the best from ourselves and our teammates on and off the field.

  • What do you base your cuts on, or what makes a strong candidate?
We look for the following criteria in potential players (in no particular order):
    • Aggression (defensive and offensive)
    • Defensive positioning/ Marking
    • Throwing/ Catching ability
    • Mark breaking ability
    • Overall fitness
    • Speed and agility
    • Field awareness/ Timing
    • Attitude/ eagerness to improve
    • Past playing experience
    • Potential level of commitment
  • Are the tryouts learning experiences of their own, so should people try out even if they don't expect to make it?
  • Definitely, we are encouraging people who want to play at a higher level to come out but we also want to keep the tryoutee pool limited to people who are specifically interested in playing for Showdown either this season or in the future so that we can devote a fair amount of time to the people trying out for team spots. We also have practice players, for people who are looking to improve and play at a higher level, but who want less of a financial or time commitment.

  • Are there any open practices or competitive pickup games where people should show up to see how they compare or gel with the team?
  • Yes, we are having women's pick-up this Thursday at the IM fields at 7:00 pm!

  • What is the typical commitment? How many practices are there, what are costs for the season, etc.?
  • High level of commitment: practice or tournament every weekend from July to October with different requirements depending on what city you live in (and the potential for different practice locations), 3 practices/workouts a week, 3 flying tournaments and one driving (not including series), most importantly a commitment to personal improvement and having fun. =)
