Austin Ultimate has had a unique relationship with Mexican Ultimate for more than a decade. Dating back into the late 90’s, teams from Mexico City have come to play many times at Centex. Starting in 2001, a player from Austin named Gary Breaux made his first trip to Mexico to play Ultimate. In subsequent years, Austin players have come together to form a team called Los Ilegales to make an annual pilgrimage (by bus) to play in the Fever in the Desert tournament in San Luis Potosi, Mexico (SLP).

Many notable Austin players have made this trip, including Bogo, Marta Puyana, Bob Kramm, Molly Sandel, Brian Thomas, Chill, Amanda Berens, Mia Iseman, Matteo, and many, many others.

There are six to eight major tournaments in Mexico each year that crisscross Mexico from Xalapa in the east to Guadalajara in the west and all points in between. Three of those tournaments are especially notable to Austinites and therefore described in greater detail within this website.

Before going further, read the following excerpt from an email sent by Calvin Maginel after he had just returned from the trip to SLP in 2008…
