The Doublewide Sarasota Experience

by Marcus Gavin

Tied at 13’s. Double game point. Pulling to Ring of Fire for a chance to get 5th place and finish higher than Doublewide has ever placed...

It’s hard to believe that three days of Ultimate all came down to one point, but that was the scenario. The season was on the line, and even though only seven dubs could take the field, all 26 dubs were in the game ready to leave it all there. Sure, nearly all the spectators were several fields away watching highly touted semi-finals games or distracted by the allure of the beer tent. Yes, temperatures in excess of 90 degrees had sapped energy; faces were sunburned; muscles were on the verge of cramping; water bottles were empty; voices were hoarse. None of it mattered.

Tied at 13’s. Double game point. Pulling to Ring of Fire for a chance to get 5th place. That’s where a season of 6am track workouts, 2nd place finishes, and endless throwing sessions had landed Doublewide, and nothing would distract the team from the singular goal of winning this one point. Saying the point was epic would be cliché, but how else can you describe a 20 minute point with 7 turnovers, 4 injury subs, and 2 teams pushing themselves to win 1 last point?

It was epic. It embodied a great season, a great tournament, a great team. Doublewide earned 5th place, and celebrated together bringing it in for one last dub.
