Barely Even Human Savage Tournament
by J
Do you hate sharing your toys, french fries and your PT? Does having to sub-out make you bristle like an old toothbrush? The solution to your selfish self is the Barely Even Human Savage Tournament coming up on Saturday, October 10th. This will be Austin’s first Savage tournament in recent memory.
Riverside Ultimate will be the host. The YMCA fields will be the place. Ten teams with seven players each will be the ingredients. It is a marathon of Ultimate where talent matters, but resolve and determination may well be the deciding factors.
For those who've not played in a savage tournament before... all teams must have exactly seven players each with no subs. Otherwise, all of your favorite 11th Edition rules still apply. Games will be played to 11. Two pools of five will start out, but only 8 teams will advance to the quarters where single elimination will see who can claim the title of "Barely Even Human" champion. (The tourney name comes from the Pocahontas song "Savages, Savages, Barely Even Human").
Tournament proceeds will benefit two charities- the YMCA which is hosting the tournament and the charity Junior Achievement of Central Texas. Junior Achievement's programs focus on work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy, and teach young people important skills to help them become economically empowered. JA students learn how to start and grow a business, how to successfully contribute in the workplace, and how to effectively manage the money they earn. JA programs teach kids "21st Century" skills such as leadership, teamwork, and critical thinking, and helps students make the transition from school to the business world.
On a personal note from me, the tournament director, I joined this program when I was in junior high and it gave me some of the skills and support I needed to be one of the first in my family to graduate from college. I would even suggest that JA gave me many of the skills I’ve used to run Ultimate tournaments both in and around Austin.
As an aside, this tournament is just one of the ways Riverside is helping to raise money for this charity. Five Riverside Ultimate Players, (Matt Naylor, Splat, Joel Myers, THE Chad Larson and me) will be running in a marathon relay on September 27th in order to raise funds for the same charity. If you'd like to donate but won't be able to play or if you simply want to learn more about Junior Achievement, please visit this webpage .
Bids have already been taken and there's only 10 total to be had so do it today. The cost is $140 per team. Included will be the standard Ultimate breakfast amenities and water. Send your bid, money and/or questions to riversideultimate@gmail.com
